Frequently Asked Questions for Bus Operators

Do I need to have professional driving experience to apply?

You don’t need to have professional driving experience! Your recent work experience should demonstrate strong customer service, reliability, and good communication skills. (People who are currently self-employed are encouraged to apply.)

Do I need to have a Commercial Driver License (CDL) already?

No need to have a CDL already, but you’ll have to get the appropriate learner’s permit before you can begin training. (If you already have a CDL, you may be able to accelerate some parts of training and get on the road faster.)

What kind of vehicles will I be driving?

You’ll train to drive all the different types of vehicles in the Mountain Line fleet, which means you’ll be able to provide both fixed route and Paratransit service. (That includes 35- and 30-foot diesel and battery electric buses, body-on-chassis cutaways, vans, and mini-vans.)

What will my schedule look like when I start?

After you are done with training, you will be a Report Operator, which means you’ll get your work schedule the day before. (While you’re a report operator, you’ll also earn an additional $3 per hour!) You’ll remain a Report Operator until you move up in seniority. (Schedules are selected based on seniority every three months.)

Mountain Line provides service seven days a week, including Sundays. Days off and work shifts are determined by seniority.

Operators are guaranteed a minimum of 30 hours of pay per week, but the weekly schedule typically assigns at least 40 hours per week. Schedules might include split days off and/or split shifts.

Hours of service:
Monday–Friday: 5:15 am – 10:50 pm
Saturday: 8:15 am – 10:50 pm
Sunday: 8:15 am – 8:50 pm

Does Mountain Line require drug testing for transit operators?

Yes, you’ll need to pass a drug test (which includes testing for marijuana). Operators will be subject to drug and alcohol testing throughout employment.

Do transit operators belong to a union?

Transit operators are represented by Teamsters Local Union No. 2.

What do I need to be eligible to apply?

Be at least 21 years old at the time you apply (for insurance purposes).
Hold a valid Montana driver license and have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver Class B Learner’s Permit with the Air Brake and Passenger endorsements.
Have an excellent employment history with a strong customer service background, as well as a satisfactory driving record.
Have an acceptable driving record at the time of offer.

- 10 years without driver license revocation or suspension
Be able to speak and write in English.
Be available for all hours of operation
